Futurological Congress
The Center for Advanced Studies of Eurac Research, in partnership with Museion Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Bolzano Bozen, is excited to announce a call for artworks related to the upcoming initiative the Futurological Congress, taking place in May 2026. The project brings together art and science to explore and reflect on the role of Artificial Intelligence in everyday life.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fundamentally reshaping our world. No longer a distant vision of the future, AI is already embedded in our everyday lives, often operating silently in the background. It holds tremendous potential to address complex challenges across diverse sectors and to sustainably enhance our quality of life. As an ever-evolving sociotechnical phenomenon, AI should not be confined to academic discourse or technical circles alone. It must become part of a broader societal conversation. To foster this dialogue, we need diverse and accessible approaches – and this is where art can play a vital role. By translating the abstract and often invisible workings of AI into tangible, experiential formats, artistic and creative expressions can invite wider public engagement and critical reflection.
Nowadays AI transcends technological spheres and inspires the cultural and artistic domains. Alongside utopian visions of progress and innovation fuelled by these technology developments come dystopian fears connected to losing identity and control, with significant risks and ethical concerns that must not be overlooked. This is where creative processes grind, glitch, hesitate, and transform. In the face of potential AI-driven anthropological changes, artists are called to answer fundamental questions like: How could and should our future(s) with AI look like?
The Futurological Congress is an interdisciplinary festival designed with these questions in mind. It creates a space for open, interdisciplinary dialogue and encourages meaningful reflection on the future shaped by/through technology. It will take place in South Tyrol in the first week of May 2026. A key component of the congress is the digital exhibition "Future(s) Forward", which will be available in multiple public locations in South Tyrol from 17 April to 9 May 2026. This exhibition will be freely accessible, aiming to bring the discussion around AI into the public sphere.
This call invites students and graduates (max. 1 year since graduation) from all disciplines – artists, coders, thinkers and experimenters – from all over the European Union to submit an artwork that explores, interprets, or responds to themes related to the utopian or dystopian future(s) that might emerge from the interaction between human and artificial intelligence(s).
We are looking for candidates who are passionate about exploring new ways of understanding the world and are interested in AI, algorithms or technological innovation and the reflection on how these may impact our individual and collective lives.
Eligible proposals will be evaluated by an interdisciplinary jury of three members: a representative of Eurac Research, a representative of MUSEION and one external expert. The selected artworks will be included in the digital exhibition “Future(s) Forward” connected to the Futurological Congress. All selected artists will be invited to South Tyrol between April and May; further details will follow in due time.
The evaluation of eligible proposals will be based on the following criteria to ensure a fair and comprehensive assessment:
